It doesn&#8217;t even have to be a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smart_phone\">Smartphone<\/a>.<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The reason why I selected a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sony_Ericsson_K800i\">Sony Ericsson K800i<\/a> is because&#8230; I still use it! \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 Though I use a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sony_Ericsson_K800i\">SE K800i<\/a> here to demonstrate the settings, I&#8217;m pretty sure you can use the same settings with any phone that supports IMAP to send and receive Gmail messages.<\/p>\n<p>Off to the steps&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Enable IMAP access in Gmail<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t already done so, you have to enable IMAP access in Gmail, so that you can use the mail client in your mobile device to access your email.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong>Go to &#8220;Settings&#8221; in Gmail and select the &#8220;Forwarding and POP\/IMAP&#8221; tab:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/forwarding-and-pop-imap-tab-in-settings.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"forwarding and pop-imap tab in settings\" width=\"522\" height=\"66\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. <\/strong>In the &#8220;IMAP Access&#8221; section, select the &#8220;Enable IMAP&#8221; under &#8220;Status&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/enable-IMAP-radio-button.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"enable IMAP radio button\" width=\"383\" height=\"75\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Remember to save your changes<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Set up the mobile phone\u2019s mail client<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong>From standby, select &#8220;Menu&#8221; =&gt; &#8220;Messaging&#8221; =&gt; &#8220;Email&#8221; =&gt; &#8220;Settings&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Messaging.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Messaging_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Messaging\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Email.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Email_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Email\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Settings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Settings_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Settings\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. <\/strong>Select &#8220;New Account&#8221; and type a name for your account (e.g.: &#8220;My Gmail Account&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/New-Account.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/New-Account_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"New Account\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Enter-Account-Name.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Enter-Account-Name_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Enter Account Name\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. <\/strong>When you press &#8220;Ok&#8221;, you will be taken to the first set of settings. Select &#8220;Connect Using&#8221; and select a data account you have set up in the phone (If you don\u2019t have one, you will have to set up a data account with your mobile operator first. Without a data connection, you won\u2019t be able to continue).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Connect-Using.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Connect-Using_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Connect Using\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Select-data-account.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Select-data-account_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Select data account\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. <\/strong>Once the data account is selected you will be back to the settings. Now select the next item, &#8220;Email Address&#8221; and enter your full Gmail address (including &#8220;@gmail.com&#8221;). Press Ok.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Email-Address.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Email-Address_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Email Address\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Enter-email-address.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Enter-email-address_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Enter email address\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>5. <\/strong>Next step is to select &#8220;Connection Type&#8221;. Select <strong>IMAP4<\/strong> as the connection type.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Connection-Type.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Connection-Type_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Connection Type\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Select-connection-type.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Select-connection-type_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Select connection type\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. <\/strong>Then change the &#8220;Incoming Server&#8221; option&#8217;s value to <strong>imap.gmail.com<\/strong>. Username should be your <strong>full email address<\/strong> and set your <strong>Gmail password<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/incoming-server.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/incoming-server_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"incoming server\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/username.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/username_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"username\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/password.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/password_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"password\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>7. <\/strong>Change the &#8220;Outgoing server&#8221; option&#8217;s value to <strong>smtp.gmail.com<\/strong>, and move on to the &#8220;Advanced Settings&#8221; option.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/outgoing-server.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/outgoing-server_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"outgoing server\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/advanced-settings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/advanced-settings_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"advanced settings\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> Under Advanced Settings, you can set your name (how you want it to appear in mails) and a signature. Under &#8220;Download S&amp;R&#8221;, I recommend you select &#8220;Subjects Only&#8221; so that you can check the subject and decide whether to press the button on the mail to download it or not.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Check Interval&#8221; can be used <strong>if you don&#8217;t want to use Push email<\/strong>. Setting a check interval won&#8217;t keep the phone connected always. Instead it will check for mail periodically when the check interval elapses (This is recommended if your phone has battery life problems!).<\/p>\n<p>Turn &#8220;Push email&#8221; on if you want to be notified about incoming email as it arrives (like in a BlackBerry!). This option will not be available at this time. <strong>But it will be available AFTER you create the account<\/strong>. The only warning I would give is that it will drain your battery fast. So if it is a problem, leave it off and use the &#8220;Check Interval&#8221; option to an appropriate value.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/name-and-signature.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/name-and-signature_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"name and signature\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Check-interval-push-email-and-allow-connection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Check-interval-push-email-and-allow-connection_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Check interval, push email and allow connection\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. <\/strong>Now select the &#8220;Encryption&#8221; option. You will find two sub options in it. Select <strong>SSL<\/strong> for &#8220;Incoming Server&#8221; option and select &#8220;TLS&#8221; for the &#8220;Outgoing Server&#8221; option. Use the back button on the phone to come out of the &#8220;Encryption&#8221; settings.<\/p>\n<p>Select the &#8220;Outgoing Username&#8221; next and enter you full email address (including &#8220;@gmail.com&#8221;). And enter you Gmail password for &#8220;Outgoing Password&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Set the &#8220;Incoming port&#8221; to 993 and &#8220;Outgoing port&#8221; to 587. That is the last option under the &#8220;Advanced settings&#8221; section. Now press the back button to come to the previous settings screen. Press the back button again to come out of the email settings altogether.<\/p>\n<p>You should get a popup saying: &#8220;Account created. Select the new account if you want to use it as your active account.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/outgoing-username-and-password.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/outgoing-username-and-password_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"outgoing username and password\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/incoming-port-and-outgoing-port.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/incoming-port-and-outgoing-port_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"incoming port and outgoing port\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/account-created.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guganeshan.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/account-created_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"account created\" width=\"150\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Note: Hope you remember, I said that the &#8220;Push&#8221; email option wouldn&#8217;t be available until the account is created. Now, either you should get another popup sooner or later saying that Push access can be enabled asking whether to enable it, or you can go into the settings again and turn it on).<\/p>\n<p>To go back to edit any settings you should follow:<\/p>\n<p>Messaging =&gt; Email =&gt; Settings =&gt; (now highlight the account) =&gt; More =&gt; Edit Account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. <\/strong>To send and receive email, come into the email inbox =&gt; More =&gt; Send &amp; Receive. You can mark mails for deletion.
